converting .avi file with mpeg audio to .avi with 5.1

i am having file in .avi format with xvid codec[MPEG-4 video] and Mpeg audio layer. Now i want to convert it to xvid with 5.1 channel and dolby. I tried by loading xvid with ac3 profile and selecting channels as 6 and also not selected auto syn box selected. After conversion i gets error message as audio format not supported. But converting file by loading same profile and subsequently leaving channels as 2(not changing to 6) is working with dolby and xvid video format, but only dolby not 5.1. If i selects channels only i gets problem. what to do get with 5.1.
If i tried selecting above profile and selected do not encode audio in audio option the audio is only coming after conversion. pls. help

Hello,

check your codec package.
The AC3 is a codec to install on your computer, it is never installed with the standard audio codec package.
You can download K-Lite codec pack and in the set-up install process, check the box AC3 5.1 channels.
