is this malware?

Postby DrWattsOn » 13 Feb 2013, 20:56

Dear Cocoon Software,
Back when I was running WinXP-Pro on an old Athlon CPU with a whopping 1GB of RAM, I had become a fan of your QMC product.
Three computers later, and having acquired a conscience regarding open source or even closed source freeware, and even though my income has become "fixed" (which means I'm always "broke" on Social Security) (humor best appreciated in English) I have made it a practice to make regular donations via PayPal to every program I actually use, based upon how much I use them.
That is why I made a donation to cocoonsoftware a couple of days ago, after I remembered QMC, and downloaded and installed version 4.5.0.5.

Now I find that I must write this email. I consider to be malware, absolutely anything that goes onto my computer after I have indicated that I do not want it. I don't know how differently the French grammar works, but even most English speakers don't get the difference in emphasis of these following two examples:

1: "I do not want it to be on my computer".
2: "I want it to not be on my computer".
The second example is specifically and forcefully negative. Saying what does not want, is not the same as specifying what one does want to not be.

That being said, I had hoped that declining the Ask Toolbar upon installation of QMC, would mean that there would be nothing put on my computer related to the Ask Toolbar as a result of installing QMC. And, it also bothered me, that I actually needed to opt out.

Then I got curious and checked my Registry. I am running Windows 7 Professional, 32-bit, retail purchase. I found extensive additions referring to Ask.com, apnanalytics, other apn... entries, and even a "PC SOFT" entry, which I did not knowingly place on my machine.

I made extensive copies of all files and exported all registry hivekeys related to these entries, and uninstalled QMC from the Control Panel. And find that these Registry entries still existed. So, I went in and did what I call "Raped my Registry" by manually deleting everything related to these entries.

Although the computer has rebooted at properly at least once, and a thorough hunt proved these entries had not been reseeded, I will be holding my breath that I need to reinstall and revalidate my Windows OS at any moment.

All of this took several hours. I was not in a "happy" frame of mind. If you visit my home and ask if your friend can come in my back door and I say "No" and then find him in my kitchen ... well, use your imagination.

I would have been willing to pay upfront for your program sans any of this MALWARE. The way your program functions, it itself is malware. It operates by deceit. Deceit, lying, trickery, fraud, all are merely other types of the use of force to achieve one's purposes against the will of the one being lied to.

I am very disappointed in Cocoon Software, and in every employee or other associate in your organization. Shame on you. I trusted you and you deceived me. There's nothing I can do about it except avoid all your products, and when I find the time, warn others of the facts.

The number of individuals in the world, with any real moral character and honor, is rapidly approaching zero. My only course of action is to not participate in that degeneration. I find this incident very depressing.

You should not have to ask what I want from you. I have been very clear.

Most sincerely,
DrWattsOn

If you are sure that the toolbar is installed without your consent.
Ask to File a complaint against Ask but not against Cocoon Software.
We propose simply to install the search motor "Ask" and we have no mastery of programming or installation.
We have made a partnership with Ask so we can pay the charges for the servers and the development tools.
the tools are very expensive and the acquisition of certain licenses in order to translate QMC also.

I hope now that you are insured.
Our goal is to always offer a free program.

Hi, Staffers,
I apologize it took me so long to get back to you with a reply. I see most of your points.
I realized I do use Ask.com occasionally for research, but I still don't want their stuff
on my computer. But, I will try once again to download and install your product from the
links you provided for me.

Your response did fail to address the inclusion by your software of Reg entries by "apnanalytics".
Maybe the problem is counterfeit software downloads put on servers my hackers. So I will only
use the links you sent me. Thanks.

Thank you also for printing my subject in the forum. I hope someone can benefit from it.
Sincerely, :)

What about the latest QMC version with the conduit installer though, that can have add-on options that are known to be tricky to remove and I personally have had problems with myself. The add-on options for it though keep changing because I am currently having problems installing the latest version and have downloaded and tried to install your brilliant software a few times on my new windows 8 computer to no avail. I have also seen one add-on on your installer I have had a very bad problem with in the past and others that are known to cause problems, and sometimes the do not install option of the add on is a bit hidden. Is somebody checking all these add-ons the QMC conduit installer is offering by any chance?
