AVI to iPod - FFMPEG stopped working -Solved

Postby noahsmybro » 04 Mar 2013, 04:42

For a few years I've been using QMC on an old laptop to convert .avi files to iPod-format files.

I recently tried to install QMC on to a newer, faster PC and almost every time I try to launch a conversion I get an error that 'FFMPEG has stopped working' for every file in the conversion list.

I've uninstalled and reinstalled QMC a few times.

I am currently running v4.5.0.6, 64-bit. I was seeing the same problem using 4.5.0.5.
The PC is running Windows 7 Ultimate SP1, 64-bit, 8Gb RAM.

I've been selecting Easy Mode, and choosing the format "XviD for iPod (.mp4) 4:3", and receiving the error ALMOST every time I try to convert a file. Very rarely the program does run and convert the file successfully.

Just now though, I selected "iPod Custom Resize" instead of the 4:3 choice, and I did not change the defaults. I then ran the conversion successfully, on the same original .avi file that had thrown the error consistently when choosing the 4:3 setting.

Questions:
1) If I chose Custom Resize, but then changed nothing about the profile, should the results be the same as if I'd chosen the iPod 4:3 option?
2) What might explain why the stadard profile throws the FFMPEG error, but the Custom Resize option doesn't?

The file that was consistently throwing the error (until I chose Custom Resize) is described here:
